Ambassadorís Biography

H.E. Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Christos was appointed, in April 2002, as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to the Kingdom of Belgium, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Kingdom of the Netherlands (as of July 2006). Ambassador Berhane is also Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the European Union.

Born in Makelle, Ethiopia, on 6 March 1953. He is married and has three children. Ambassador Berhane attended the General Wingate High School and Haile Selassie I University (now Addis Ababa University) from 1971-1974. Ambassador Berhane speaks English, Italian, Amharic and Tigrigna. He holds a Masters Degree in International Relations from the University of Amsterdam.

In 1976, he joined the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and served as a member of the political department for one year. From 1977-1979 he was head of the administration and mass organizations of the Front. In 1983 he was elected to the leadership of the TPLF. From 1988-91 he headed the diplomatic mission within the Foreign Relations Bureau of the Ethiopian Peoplesí Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). As a foreign representative of the front, he traveled extensively to Europe, Asia, Africa, Canada and the United States popularizing the cause of the front among government officials, congresses, parliaments, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, the media and the public at large.

From June 1991 to March 1992, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Ambassador at Large. In March 1992, Ambassador Berhane was appointed as Ethiopian Ambassador to the United States, where he served up to his appointment to the Benelux and the EU in 2002.
